Introduction

This challenging project started in 2018. The Foundry Studio was commissioned to design and build 3 stainless steel staircases for a Private Collector’s House.

The conception take his roots in the post-modernism movement, showing how the object is constructed. Considering the size of the main staircase, the goal was to pre-fabricate all parts of the 3 staircases off-site and assemble it in their final space. The main staircase is a 12 meters high free standing stainless steel object which took 3 years to develop, build and install. No welding or work from any kind was made on site except the assembly. No painting used to hide the fabrication process.

The design required countless time sketching and building mock-ups in foam and metal. The result is a simple geometric form emphasizing the movement given by the different stairs.

Once the production staged arrived, were developed several processes, from a custom laser cutting, custom metal folding or custom welding and finishing procedures. All these new techniques were developed with the concourse of our supplier, a metal factory usually working in space and aviation, which has opened its doors to let us research, experiment and develop during several months. All procedures were developed at the closest with all workers and craftmen in order to achieve the most precise result.
