Introduction

Franko B is a recognized performance artist who wanted to innovate and asked AMMA Studio Director, Anthony Martin, to collaborate on his new Work. In discussion with him we decided to use innovative 360 degrees body mapping technique of a film made up of thousands of found images he has collected over the last years, merged with archives videos of his iconic performances. I’m Here challenges the audience to confront their own history, a global history of war, abandonment, homophobia, freedom, displacement, famine and sex.

Franko B started performing at fetish nights in London’s underground club scene, at the height of the AIDS epidemic, and has since performed in world class institutions such as the ICA, the Arnolfini, South London Gallery and Tate Modern. In I’m Here, present but disembodied, Franko B’s iconic performances are projected onto his body, providing a portrait of our failing society, questioning and reinterpreting the past.

Anthony also composed the soundtrack with the help of Arthur Piquer, a young artist met at Andrei Molodkin’s Foundry in the south of France. It is a conception based on Maurice Ravel’s Bolero, with patterns added on top on each other, mixing sadness and nagging melodies with a raising pressure until climax.
